Up in the Air: Overstory x Camparino
Overstory, the critically acclaimed cocktail bar on the 64th floor of 70 Pine Street in Lower Manhattan’s Financial District, whose wraparound terrace affords a panaromaic view of the New York City skyline, was recently named the No. 3 Best Bar on the North America’s 50 Best Bars list.
I certainly can’t count myself as a regular at Overstory as I’ve only been a handful of times, which were all when they were hosting a pop-up for a visiting international bar. And while I promised them I would be back on my own to simply enjoy myself over cocktails, it was yet another celebrated collaboration that recently brought me back to the bar.
For one night only, Harrison Ginsberg, Bar Director at Overstory, Crown Shy, and Saga would be behind the Overstory bar with Tommaso Cecca, the Global Head Of Camparino Licensing & Mixology at Camparino in Galleria, located on the corner of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II just across from Milan’s historic Duomo di Milano.
I first met Tommaso in Milan in 2017 and we’ve become dear friends since then. He’s welcomed me back to his city and bar many times and has been extremely generous sharing his knowledge of Italy and Italian drinking culture with me for stories and my next book. And I never pass up a chance to spend some time together when he’s here in New York, and we’ve worked together on several events at the Campari Academy here in New York.
But before Tommaso and Harrison could take the lobby elevator at 70 Pine Street to the 64th floor, they first made a grand entrance from 33,000 feet flying from Milan to New York on the French all business-class boutique airline, La Compagnie, where they offered passengers what was likely a most refined in-flight drinks service of signature cocktails, including Overstory’s Rose Gold Negroni and Camparino’s Compadre.
Their spirited collaboration continued in New York at Overstory, where I was invited to stop by for a preview of service before the room opened to reservations.
