Dive Bar Jukebox with Trevor Gulliver
"The mist across the window hides the lines. But nothing hides the color of the lights that shine."
Welcome to Dive Bar Jukebox, where bartenders, writers, chefs, musicians, and a cast of cool characters answer the question: If we were hanging out together at a bar and I put ten credits on the jukebox, what songs would you punch in and why? Their responses reveal thoughts on their favorite dive bars along with a hand-picked, annotated playlist for your weekend listening pleasure.

Trevor Gulliver
For years I had only known noted British restaurateur Trevor Gulliver from afar, but I finally had the chance to meet him around this time last spring when St. John, the acclaimed London restaurant he co-founded with chef Fergus Henderson, popped-up in Brooklyn, just up the street from my apartment at The Long Island Bar.
I’m embarrassed to admit that I still haven’t been to St. John (when I travel abroad I tend to spend more time in Italy rather than the U.K.), but I cherish the St. John ashtray/key dish my friend Peter brought me back as a souvenir many years ago, where it’s remained a cherished tailsman on my desk through living In two different, cross-country cities and five different apartments.
I met Fergus once, long ago in Seattle during a culinary conference, and years later he was generous enough to offer an endorsement for my book Amaro. During that marathon St. John lunch at L.I.B. I had the chance to personally thank Trevor for helping coordinate Fergus’ act of kindness and when I told him about LAST CALL he expressed a desire to be in the mix for a future Dive Bar Jukebox. He’s a very busy man and it took us nearly a year of correspondence and delays to make it happen, but I’m thrilled to finally share this with readers.
And Trevor tells me the St. John plans to be back in Brooklyn this summer, so I’ll get to see him once again (though I need to prioritize a return trip to London to see him and Fergus on their home turf.)
