Welcome back to Dive Bar Jukebox, where every Friday bartenders, writers, chefs, musicians, and a host of dynamic people answer the question: If we were hanging out together at a bar and I put ten credits on the jukebox, what songs would you punch in and why? Their answers reveal thoughts on their favorite dive bars along with a hand-picked, annotated 10-song playlist for your weekend listening pleasure. And stick around after the last song for a recipe for a recipe for a Tiki-inspired tropical swizzle.
Today’s special guest is…
Sam Miller
I’ve had the chance to interview Sam a couple of times for stories I was working on but we didn’t meet in person until this year’s Bar Convent Brooklyn conference where we were both sitting in on a seminar on frozen drinks. It was an absolute joy to catch up with him and follow his adventures online as he double-downed on a weekend of exploring the New York bar scene.
Miller is a bartender, an activist, a certified sommelier, a musician, and an outdoor enthusiast who calls Utah home. He has been in the hospitality industry for almost two decades, working at bars and restaurants in Park City, Jackson Hole, Denver, Honolulu, and San Francisco, where he was the Bar Manager at The Zombie Village and Pagan Idol. He’s passionate about the world of tiki drinks and culture and has since returned to Utah to open Island Time, Salt Lake City’s first tropical bar and pop-up series.
Miller is also a co-founder of B4Change (Bartenders for Change), a social justice organization comprised of hospitality professionals focused on reshaping the industry to be more inclusive and equitable for all marginalized people.
