Dive Bar Jukebox with Charlie Hall
"Love my way, it's a new road. I follow where my mind goes."
This Friday’s “Very Special Episode” of Dive Bar Jukebox is free to all readers and subscribers. (It means a lot to this one-man band!)
Welcome back to Dive Bar Jukebox, where every Friday bartenders, writers, chefs, musicians, and a host of dynamic people answer the question: If we were hanging out at a bar together and I put ten credits on the jukebox, what songs would you punch in and why? Their answers reveal thoughts on their favorite dive bars along with a hand-picked, annotated 10-song playlist for your weekend listening pleasure.
Earlier this week LAST CALL welcomed Charlie Hall, the Grammy Award-winning drummer for The War on Drugs, where we talked about life on the road, wrapping up a year-long world tour, some of his favorite spots in Philadelphia, thoughts on beloved drummers and their jams, the Bell Pepper Thing (his new house cocktail—check it out), his upcoming solo album, and an all-star Christmas album featuring the Philadelphia Eagles.
In today’s Dive Bar Jukebox, Charlie Hall has a lot of thoughts on, and some great memories of, his favorite dives and what exactly makes a dive bar a dive bar. And as a musician, you just know how much time and thought he put into curating his playlist (he couldn’t stop at ten songs, so there are three bonus tracks). And Hall shares the history of his vintage, carefully restored 1963 Seeburg jukebox that, aside from his wife, Anne, and their two sons, is the heart and soul (…and funk, and disco, and rock and roll, and jazz…) of their Philadelphia home.
