Welcome to the first installment of Dive Bar Jukebox, where every Friday on LAST CALL I’ll feature a lineup of bartenders, chefs, musicians, writers, and other cool people to talk about their favorite dive bars and share a hand-picked, annotated 10-song playlist. The jukebox in question isn’t necessarily one from a specific bar, and the songs don’t have to be about drinking or bars. The idea is if I gave you some dollar bills to slide into a jukebox at a bar, whether you’re day drinking or staying out way too late, what are the ten go-to songs you’d play and why?
A great mix of people will be dropping by in the weeks ahead, but I hope you’ll indulge me as I kick things off with my own Dive Bar Jukebox playlist. But first, a story about a late night in Memphis with troubled souls and a phantom jukebox.
